Collectible Moscow Circus hat in red, yellow and blue, Detroit 1989 Nov. 6-12. The famed Moscow Circus had gotten its best acts together and took them on a nine-month tour that included stops in Canada and the United States. New York promoter Steve Leber put up $15 million to finance the tour. Mr. Leber and the circus first capitalized on the West's fascination with all things Soviet in 1988, when the circus toured the United States for the first time in 10 years. In 1989, the circus and Leber signed an agreement to keep the circus coming yearly. Circus authorities paid the performers' regular salaries, and Leber covered North American expenses. 1989's road show went beyond the regular Moscow Circus. According to Leber, it included some of the best of 1,400 circus acts selected from throughout the USSR. The troupe had recently completed a one-month dress rehearsal in Leningrad and opened its North American tour in Toronto.
